Electric Gearing

Electrically controlled systems are our most popular choice due to their reliability and cost-effectiveness.  Electric opening systems can be operated by a simple on/off switch or a control panel with automatic sensors.  For larger projects, control panels can manage vents in groups and link to Building Management Systems (BMS) for smoke control.

Electric Opening Systems

Electrically controlled systems to operate our opening vents have become the most popular devices in recent times.  Reliability combined with low relative cost make electrically controlled opening vents the number one choice for the majority of projects that we undertake.  The actuators can be controlled by either a simple wall mounted on/off switch or a more sophisticated control panel that can combine automatic temperature control, rain and wind sensors.  On larger commercial projects the control panels for the electric opening systems can be supplied with options to open the vents in banks and can include timers and key switches or be linked to a separate Building Management System (BMS) to allow for smoke control

There are two main types of electric actuators that are available to control opening vents. These are Linear actuators and Chain actuators.

Linear Actuators

These devices incorporate a rigid rod that is driven by the motor to open and close.  The depth of a linear actuator will be at least 200mm greater than the opening stroke therefore to open a vent to a typical distance of 300mm will require an actuator that extends at least 500mm into the building space.

Although these types of actuator are considered more robust than Chain actuators for roof glazing applications, aesthetics will generally require a less obtrusive device for this purpose.

Chain Actuators

Our chain actuators are innovative devices that utilise a stainless steel chain, similar to a bicycle chain, instead of a rigid rod.  When the motor is engaged, the chain is unwound and becomes semi-rigid as it leaves the unit, allowing it to push the vent open.  Thanks to their compact and unobtrusive design, chain actuators are the most suitable choice for our roof opening vents.

Compact Chain Actuators

Our compact chain actuators are the preferred option for most of our contracts, known for their pleasing aesthetics and impressive reliability.  These devices are available in 24-volt models, perfect for integration with our weather control systems.  Key features include:

  • Stroke Lengths: Available in 250mm and 400mm.
  • Load Capacity: Capable of lifting weights up to 40 kgs.
  • Construction: Extruded aluminium actuator casing, polyester powder-coated in metallic grey as standard. Custom RAL colours are available at an extra cost.

ACK5 Series Chain Actuators

We also offer the ACK5 series, available in 230-volt models, ideal for general use and glazing modules under 625mm wide.  The ACK5 series features:

  • Stroke Lengths: Seven adjustable opening lengths ranging from 100mm to 400mm.
  • Load Capacity: Capable of lifting weights up to 30 kgs.
  • Construction: Die-cast actuator casing, polyester powder-coated in standard colours of white and black. Custom RAL colours are available at an extra cost.

Both our Compact and ACK 5 chain actuators combine functionality, durability, and a sleek design, making them an excellent choice for various applications.

Control Switches And Panels

Our actuators can be easily controlled by a standard wall-mounted on/off switch.  For a more advanced solution, we offer control panels with thermostatic control and rain sensors.  These systems can be programmed to open or close at defined temperatures, include a manual override and can be operated remotely by remote control.

Control Panel and Switch Options:

  • 230 Volt Systems:
    • Standard Switch:
      • Operates up to 8 opening vents simultaneously
    • Control Panel:
      • Operates up to 12 opening vents simultaneously
      • Includes thermostatic control
      • Features a rain sensor
      • Programmable to open/close at defined temperatures
      • Manual override option
  • 24 Volt Systems:
    • Control Panel:
      • Operates up to 30 opening vents simultaneously
      • Allows simultaneous or zoned operation
      • Includes thermostatic control
      • Features a rain sensor
      • Programmable to open/close at defined temperatures
      • Manual override option
      • Remote control option
    • Standard Switch:
      • Operates up to 3 opening vents simultaneously
      • Features a rain sensor

For large projects with many openers, we recommend our 24-volt control panel, capable of managing multiple vents in various configurations. Additional options include timer controls for public buildings, wind sensors for exposed buildings and humidity sensors.  Alternatively, the vents can be linked to a Building Management System (BMS).

Please note that wiring is excluded from our package and should be completed by a qualified electrician.
