Roof Canopy Replacement at Market Arcade, Newport
Reviving a Historic Shopping Gem
Market Arcade, a Victorian shopping arcade nestled in the heart of Newport, Wales, has not only served as a retail hub but also as a vital pedestrian thoroughfare connecting High Street and Newport Market. This architectural gem holds a special place in history, being the second oldest Victorian arcade still in operation in Wales, the oldest in Newport, and one of the oldest in the UK.
A Journey Through Time
Market Arcade, originally known as Fennell’s Arcade, opened its doors in 1869. Later, in the early 20th century, it acquired the name Flowers Arcade, reflecting the businesses that adorned its interior. However, by the early 2000s, before its much-needed renovation, the arcade had fallen into disrepair. It stood unlit, showing signs of structural decline, and was plagued by anti-social behaviour and damage.
A Heritage Renovation
In 2018, Newport City Council secured National Lottery Heritage funding amounting to £1.1 million, paving the way for a significant restoration of Market Arcade. The project was entrusted to the capable hands of contractors Anthony A. Davies and heritage architects Davies Sutton. Unfortunately, the renovation was momentarily halted by the unforeseen COVID-19 outbreak, delaying the work until June 2020.
Blending Tradition and Modernity
As part of the extensive restoration, we embarked on the replacement of 200m² of patent glazing with our exclusive Victorian lead-covered steel Heritage glazing system, which incorporated laminated safety glass. In addition, we included access ventilators, a crucial addition for future maintenance of the land-locked gutters.
Meeting Challenges Head-On
Market Arcade’s unique curved design demanded precision, which we ensured by obtaining accurate dimensions during our survey visit. Given the land-locked nature of the Arcade, the installation presented its challenges. However, through innovative hoisting and scaffolding solutions, we orchestrated a seamless glazing installation that reintroduced natural light to the arcade, all while preserving its historical charm. Our Heritage patent glazing system remains unparalleled in its ability to authentically represent Victorian conservation.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
The ambitious Market Arcade roof canopy restoration project was not only a tribute to the preservation of heritage but also a testament to the unwavering dedication of the project team. Delivered in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it underscores the resilience and commitment that fuelled its success.
Result: A Rejuvenated Gem
The restoration of Market Arcade in Newport is a story of transformation, rekindling its historical significance and architectural splendour. This case study is a testament to our ability to seamlessly blend tradition with modernity, preserving heritage while enhancing the sustainability and functionality of cherished structures. Market Arcade now shines once more, serving as a testament to the enduring appeal of Victorian architecture in the 21st century.
