Roof Glazing Replacement at Govanhill Baths, Glasgow
Project Overview
Govanhill Baths, an Edwardian public bathhouse located at 99 Calder Street in Govanhill, Glasgow, Scotland, holds the esteemed Category B listing status. This architectural gem, designed by A.B. McDonald, originally served as a multifunctional facility, opening its doors between 1912 and 1917 to provide swimming pools, public baths, and ‘slipper baths’ for individual use.
The pivotal decision to select our Heritage glazing system for the restoration of this Victorian bathhouse came after the project’s architect drew inspiration from our past work at Victoria Baths, Manchester, a project that we had completed in our Heritage system back in 2009.
Scope of Work
The primary objective of this project was to revitalise Govanhill Baths by replacing the existing glazing with our patent glazing system, covering a total area of 850m². The Govanhill Baths roof glazing restoration encompassed several distinct areas:
- The main Pond Roof and vertical patent Glazing, featuring our Heritage Glazing System.
- The Ladies Pond Roof and vertical patent Glazing, similarly utilising our Heritage Glazing System.
- The Steamie, a large self-supporting Heritage lantern skylight
- The Learner Pond, which boasted smaller self-supporting Heritage lantern skylights.
Considering the protected status of this historic structure, our unique Heritage glazing system was the ideal choice for this restoration. To enhance thermal efficiency and minimise solar heat gain, high performance solar controlled double glazed units were installed, featuring a laminated inner pane for safety compliance.
Challenges and Solutions
The complex nature of this project required meticulous planning and execution. To meet stringent program constraints, we conducted a comprehensive survey of the existing glazing months before its removal. A significant challenge arose as the secondary timber supporting structure was also scheduled for replacement, necessitating precise measurements and diligent attention to ensure accuracy. Additionally, the early survey visit offered limited scaffolding access, further adding to the complexity of the surveying process.
Project Outcome
The roof glazing replacement at Govanhill Baths stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving historical landmarks with precision and dedication. The Heritage glazing system was instrumental in restoring the architectural beauty of this Category B listed building.
The inclusion of high performance, solar controlled double glazed units improved the thermal efficiency of the structure while maintaining safety standards. The restoration process highlighted our meticulous approach to overcoming challenges related to restricted access and structural changes.
This case study underscores our dedication to preserving the historical integrity of cherished landmarks. Govanhill Baths remains a symbol of architectural and historical significance, thanks to the careful and thoughtful restoration of its glazing system.
