Revitalising Camellia House’s Roof Glazing

Nestled within Wentworth Woodhouse, the Camellia House stands as an emblem of architectural grandeur, designed in the early 19th century by Charles Watson-Wentworth, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. Its purpose was to cultivate exotic camellia plants from distant lands, symbolic of opulence and refinement.

However, the passage of time left this historical marvel in disrepair. Thanks to a £5 million investment from the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, supported by Lottery funding, the Camellia House witnessed a renaissance, reclaiming its splendour.

Our mission was clear

To restore the original Victorian glazing that once adorned this architectural gem. Employing our lead-clothed steel Heritage Patent Glazing system, unaltered in appearance since its inception a century ago, we aimed to recreate the authentic charm crucial for listed buildings like the Camellia House.

The replacement spanned 225m², incorporating natural opening ventilators with a weather control system to maintain the ideal humidity for the camellias.

Yet, the project was no easy feat. Meticulous planning became our cornerstone. Months before the removal and refurbishment, an extensive survey ensured accuracy, mitigating risks of tolerance deviations upon reinstallation.

Our collaboration with the Contractor empowered them with precise drawings for correct structural reinstatement, aligning seamlessly with our glazing installation.

The restored roof glazing is a testament to our unwavering dedication to preserving historical landmarks. The Heritage glazing system not only revived the architectural allure of this Grade II listed building but also ensured safety compliance with non-fragile assemblies, meeting CWCT TN 66 & TN67 standards.

This case study showcases our steadfast commitment to preserving historical integrity. Camellia House remains an icon of architectural and historical significance, revived through meticulous restoration of its glazing system.
