Roof Glazing Replacement at Farringdon Underground Station

Preserving Heritage in an Iconic Setting

Farringdon Station, one of the world’s oldest underground railway stations, stands as a historical landmark and proudly boasts a Grade II listed status. The station, steeped in heritage, required an extensive roof glazing replacement project. This case study highlights our successful endeavour in replacing 1,400m² of patent glazing at the station, which encompassed the complex curved roofs covering the underground and Network Rail lines, as well as the renewal of the concourse glazing.

Tailored Solutions for Historic Significance

To meet the project’s unique challenges, we engineered a bespoke glazing system, a requirement specified by the glazing consultant. This system served the dual purpose of reducing the risk of metal-to-glass contact in the event of structural vibrations. Additionally, we provided a ventilated secondary structure to enhance airflow within the station, ensuring a comfortable environment for passengers.

Logistical solution and Continuous Operation

The station’s distinctive layout and access challenges necessitated meticulous coordination of deliveries, primarily adhering to just-in-time principles. This strategy effectively addressed these logistical challenges, ensuring the unimpeded flow of passengers. To maintain concourse operations during peak hours, we strategically executed the work in this area during engineering hours, minimising disruptions.

Future-Proofing Maintenance

Understanding the importance of seamless future maintenance, we took an innovative approach by designing and manufacturing a bespoke mobile access system. This system seamlessly complements the glazing system, facilitating future repair and maintenance activities with efficiency and convenience.

Outcome: Marrying Heritage and Innovation

The roof glazing replacement at Farringdon Underground Station exemplifies our commitment to preserving historical significance while embracing innovative solutions. Our bespoke Farringdon Station roof glazing system not only addressed structural vibration concerns but also enhanced ventilation, ensuring the comfort of passengers.

The intricate logistics of this project were managed with precision, keeping the station operational without compromise. Our forward-thinking approach, with the introduction of a mobile access system, assures the station’s long-term maintainability.

This case study underscores our dedication to heritage preservation, logistical excellence and innovative solutions. Farringdon Station now stands as a shining example of historical restoration and future readiness in a bustling urban setting.
