All patent glazing systems must be installed with suitable safety glass. These are either toughened or laminated glasses or a combination of these for double and triple glazed systems.
Double and triple glazed units are usually supplied in fully toughened formats or with toughened glass to the outer panes and laminated glass to the inner panes to prevent glass from falling to the floor level in the event of breakages.

Self Cleaning glass was invented by Pilkington glass. It is frequently used on sloping patent glazing areas which are difficult to reach or do not benefit from a regular cleaning schedule. The performance of the permanent self cleaning coating will not diminish over time which gives an advantage over other spray coatings available which may need re-applying after five years.
This glass is available in a clear format as well as being offered with solar control properties to reduce solar heating within the occupied space of the building.
Textured Glass is a rolled patterned glass, one surface of which has a specific pattern or design impressed into the surface, which creates decoration. The patterned glass allows the passage of light but depending on the depth and configuration of the pattern, varying degrees of obscuration are obtained.
All patterns are classified according to their obscuration in relation to each other, the gradation being from 1 (least obscuring) to 5 (most obscuring). Maximum sheet size is very small though being only 1350mm x 2140mm.
Due to roof glazing being exposed to significantly higher levels of solar heat than vertical glazing consideration needs to be given to the possible thermal stresses created in glass which are capable of causing the glass to fracture. Toughened glass is not subject to fractures from thermal stresses. However, laminated and wired glass certainly are.
